diabetes History of Diabetes The Link to Our Health RemediesDuring my high school days, I did not like history subject at all. I did not like the memorization of dates and events at all even now. However, I started to gain interest when I got a border line sugar test level few months ago. This led me to do a research on the history of diabetes. Although my cardiovascular doctor Adel Mazen assured me I am not yet diabetic, somehow it felt that I should not take any risk. Let me invite you to join my adventure to the world of diabetes.

We are very fortunate to have the technology to access huge information on almost everything via the internet. I felt relieved to find out what had happened to the first diabetic people and being able to know how to prevent it. I found out there is a bigger risk for people over 60 years old to get this disease. The good thing about is, it can be avoided and controlled. As I go through the documents about the history of diabetes, it seems I am watching the events right in front of my eyes and I found it got stacked into my mind. Thus my appreciation on history began.

Let us define what is diabetes and why it is importnat to understand its consequences if we get it. Diabetes is a health disorder that could shorten your life. It could lead you to diseases involving your heart, kidney and lower extremeties, This disease originates from the energy foods that we eat which is turned into sugar that supply our body’s energy needs. Rice, bread, and fruits are typical example of energy foods. A diabetic person could be having a shortage or could be having an excess of insulin.

Let me share with you how diabetes got its name. It was the Greek who started calling it as diabetes which means siphon. This is based on its distinguishable characteristics to urinate more frequently and copiously when untreated. Then on the seventeenth century the word “mellitus” was added which means sweet. Did you know that in the early days, one of the popular methods of diagnosing diabetes is to taste the patient’s urine. It was based also on the colour, sediment, an odour of the urine. My grandmother even told me that they used ants because ants love sugar.

Let us remember that history is a very important subject for all of us. Its worth knowing and the reason why is because it is not just a part of our subject from the school or universities but it affects our lives as well. Diabetes is a chronic disease that may strike us if we get careless to ourselves. Let us start to build up our defenses before it is too late. Let us start today by reading some more about the history of diabetes.
